Stop AI agents from creating security blind spots

A new layer is quietly becoming part of everyday business decisions.

An email is drafted before you’ve had time to fully think through your response. A lengthy report is condensed before you’ve read every page. A system recommends the next step and, more often than not, carries it out automatically.

At this point, none of that seems out of the ordinary.

Artificial intelligence is no longer just helping people complete tasks. AI-powered productivity tools like Microsoft Copilot are increasingly influencing how work flows through an organization and, in many cases, shaping the decisions made along the way.

That leads to an important question: how much of your business is currently being influenced by AI without you having complete visibility into it?

AI agents are no longer standalone tools.

They’re becoming embedded within business workflows, connecting multiple systems together and receiving permission to perform actions across different areas of an organization.

They can retrieve information, update records, and initiate processes without someone manually overseeing every step.

That’s where things can begin to shift.

On the surface, everything appears to be running smoothly. Work gets finished more quickly. Customers receive faster responses. Employees become more productive.

But AI’s influence continues to grow.

When that influence expands without clear visibility, even basic questions become difficult to answer.

Why did that happen?
Why was that email written that way?
Why was that particular decision made?
Why did that information end up in that system?

If a customer disputes an outcome, a compliance concern arises, or an internal error occurs, you need the ability to trace the process from beginning to end.

Without understanding exactly where AI played a role, explaining the outcome can become far more complicated than it should be.

And when something can’t be explained with confidence, maintaining control becomes much more difficult.

There’s another change that’s easy to overlook: accountability.

When a person makes a decision, responsibility is usually straightforward.

When AI contributes to that decision, ownership can become blurred. Was it the configuration? The underlying data? The way the system was designed? Or the person who approved the process?

The reality is that AI is already built into many of the business applications organizations use every day, and it’s creating genuine benefits.

The key is staying aware of how decisions are being influenced, knowing which workflows include AI, understanding where automation is taking place, and maintaining a clear distinction between automation and human responsibility.

As AI agents become more capable, they’ll play an even greater role in shaping business outcomes.

The organizations that maintain visibility and control over that influence will be in the strongest position moving forward.
